Design Factors in Interior Decorating with Area Rugs

The interior design of any personal or commercial space should take care of many vital aspects. Strict adherence to the guidelines given below will help in tackling with most of these aspects. Each of these has a special role to play and it may be used in various ways depending on the kind of space you are working on.
Unity: According to this, the entire space should be dealt with as a single unit, which has been partitioned through walls, and this should be kept in mind while designing the interiors of the space, which therefore should have some uniformity. The overall theme must always be taken into account.
Balance: This entails the most appropriate spread of different items in an area. Objects which have similar visual appeal must be put at different locations in the room to strike a balance along a predefined axis. Balance is categorized into three broad kinds. The simplest one to accomplish and the most traditional one is symmetrical balance. The second type is asymmetrical balance, which is highly popular, but needs a good deal of imagination. A radial balance is the third kind, which is accomplished by defining a centre and placing objects around that.
Proportion: This takes into account sizes of different articles in relation to one another. It is critical that articles in a room go well together in terms of their sizes. The lack of proportionality will make certain pieces of furniture stand out, while some others will be left overshadowed, which will not be good for the overall beauty of the room.
Focus: Having a focus in a room is a sign of excellent interior design. The focal object may be a furniture item or even a decorative piece such as a painting or a sculpture. It is crucial that this item be in line with the design of the whole room and that it impresses the observer. It must stand out, but not look out of place.
Rhythm: Having a rhythm too is absolutely important for achieving a good design. This implies that the room must have a flowing visual pattern and clear continuity. Arches, ornate designs on walls and ceilings, cautiously selected paintings, repetition of shades and designs etc will help you attain a rhythm.
Bearing these guidelines in mind will help in effective and appealing interior designing of your house. However, it is best to use the expertise of an interior design professional who can assist you with these factors and a lot more.
All of these factors are especially important in the selection of area rugs for your home, as the size, style, design and shape all have a dramatic effect on space and perception of the room. For instance, the difference in a conventional area rug and a modern shag rug can change all of these factors in and of itself.

Affordable Interior Design Tips Including Contemporary Area Rugs

Changing the interior design provides a refreshing feeling to your home, but most people are worried about the expenses that they will have to bear while refurbishing. Here are some tips for renovating your house without spending a lot on the activity.

Any structural changes to your residence will be very expensive, and will take a lot of time. Such alterations should be avoided in all cases, with the only exception made in case when you are particularly troubled by a particular part of the house. It will be advisable to concentrate on aspects that can be altered easily, without the need of any external assistance or bearing a substantial expenditure.

Your bank will love you if you make functional structural improvements to your home that will enhance its value. Oddly enough if you read up on what some home restoration investment gurus advocate some of the improvements are low priced but can add thousands to the amount of rent you can charge if renting, plus can add to the capital value of your property as well. If you want to leverage on the increased value of your improvements then you will need to get your property revalued and then go see your lender with the new valuation.

The main focus must be on the walls. Just by changing the wallpaper or colouring the walls with a striking colour you can achieve a total makeover of your house. Factors such as the presence of natural light in the interiors of the residence, or the choices of small children who might like brighter colours should also be kept in mind when choosing a new colour.

Next, you should focus on the drapes. Again, you have to be careful about the colours and designs that you select. You must keep in mind that the type of material will determine how much light is filtered through into your home. For example, for your living room you might need a fabric that is partially transparent, through which some sunlight can pass to keep the room bright.

Furniture has an important role in the decor of a room and any home renovation exercise is not complete without considering it. The furniture made of wood can be polished again to make it look as good as new, while any fabric can either be changed or washed.

While changing your flooring can be expensive, there are such a great variety of modern and traditional area rugs available in so many styles that you can control the look and feel of most rooms simply with the application of a suitable area rug. These include rectangles, rounds, runners, ovals in a wide range of materials and construction including shag rugs.

The last consideration is artwork. New artwork such as paintings and sculptures will be a fresh addition to your interiors. You can either sell off the old sculptors and paintings or you can move them around the residence so that the rooms get a different look.

Decorate your Garage with Outdoor Rugs and Mats

Some guys want to make their garages look cool. They want to install a flat screen TV and maybe have a small workout room there. They might also want to use the garage as a place to hangout and work on a hobby or turn part of the garage into a cool game area.

If you are one of these guys, you might be considering some garage floor ideas because if you can personalize the floor, it can really take your garage up to the next level. I have seen garages where the favorite sports team logo is painted over the entire garage floor and the whole garage is a shrine to that sports team. You can also get now rugs with these logos on them custom made as indoor outdoor rugs and mats.

In order to make a garage really look cool, you need to do something with the floor. A cement or dirt floor just isn't right for a space that you want to spend quality time in. A finished garage look will depend on what type of surface you decide to cover your garage floor with and there are quite a few choices.

Your easiest choices are mats and you can decide to cover the whole floor or just part of it. Mats can be made out of rubber, plastic, polypropylene, or one can use natural rugs and mats of bamboo, jute, seagrass, or other materials and they can be made into custom shapes and sizes. If you don't want mats, you might choose to seal your floor as a way of protecting it. Sealing your garage floor is a great way of protecting it from all the dirt and water that is brought in and it makes the floor look better as well.

When you seal the floor or install mats, it also makes it easier to clean after a hard winter. People also choose to finish their garage floors because it then allows them to not have the cold pavement under their feet if they want to turn part of the garage into a workout room, game room, or some other type of room where you can go to get away from the rest of the house. Finishing the garage floor just makes the garage more complete and raises your homes resale value too.

White and Off-White Contemporary Shag Rugs for Modern Style and Living

If you’re trying to redecorate or spruce up your home this fall despite a constricted economy, you might consider a new generation of light and bright new decor items. I offer a look in this article on several products which are economical and part of the new trend to shag rug and white shag rug décor.
The popularity of the shag rug has never been higher and especially contemporary white and off-white shag rugs are extremely popular these days. Three particularly affordable items deserve mention in this discussion: off-white traditional flokati and wool shag rugs, linen-white cotton shag rugs, and a new generation of polyester shag rugs. <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->All of these products have a contemporary look, but also are made in a classic hand woven fashion. <!--[endif]-->

Pure White Cotton Shag Rugs are a unique option to conventional area rugs in your home. It’s pure white and soft shag appearance make this a special decor item. Cotton shag rugs are made in a variety of pile heights and yarn styles. Shag Rugs have always represented something warmer, more luxurious and comfortable. These cotton shag rugs bring all the traditional qualities of cotton plus the extra luxury of shag to your home décor.

Cotton is a very unique material, and accounts for about half of all the products made in the world's textile industry from natural fibers. Cotton has natural qualities that make it an optimum choice for many human uses, and it was inevitable that it would make it's way into the mainstream home decor market. Cotton fibers have a natural form that makes them extremely suitable for spinning into very strong yarns. They are very water absorbent, which means that water can penetrate completely to the core of the fiber which makes it easy to remove dirt and stains from cotton-made materials. It is also soft and comfortable to the touch, which make it a perfect choice when one expects the item to be close to the skin. One quality which suits cotton as a material for a rug, is that it does not build up static electricity readily. Because of these qualities, Cotton has become a popular choice as the basic material for the popular shag rug. It is a pure bright white, soft, thick, comfortable, and easily maintained.
For those discerning home owners who prefer a more subdued off-white appearance in a luxurious shag rug, the new generation of modern and contemporary wool shag rugs, made for the modern lifestyle is the perfect solution. These modern weave wool shag rugs are handmade with 100% Wool pile, hand loomed from New Zealand Drysdale Wool. These hand woven wool shag rugs provide a lifetime of durability, stain and soil resistance, and a tighter weave pattern than traditional flokati. The result is a beautiful, soft and white modern look in a traditional wool shag rug. The perfect combination of elements makes the modern wool shag rug the best choice for many home owners.

Flokati is a unique wool shag rug made exclusively in Greece. It is a traditional product and has been made for over 1500 years. It is hand woven, and immersed in water until the yarn swells and creates the unique flokati shag effect. This is called the “birthing” of a flokati rug. It is then sun dried. This is a unique process worldwide, and Flokati rugs are only made in Greece. It’s appearance is very unique and different from conventional shag rugs. They have been used for centuries in Greece as blankets and even beds, and can be custom made in weights up to 6.0 Kilos per square meter. That is about five inches in thickness. Technically it is also a wool shag rug; however, it has a very unique appearance compared to modern wool shag rugs.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->

The modern polyester and synthetic yarn blend shag rugs are yet another element in this expanding shag rug landscape. These rugs are easy care, washable and very durable. They are also economical compared to they’re natural fiber counterparts. They can be extremely bright white too, which is a preference for some home owners. Artificial silk and fine yarn polyester shag rugs can also be much softer than cotton or wool. All in all, there is vast selection available now of luxurious white and off-white thick and soft shag rugs in the marketplace.

Sheepskin Rugs for Healthy Living

Nothing compares to the luxuriousness and durability of sheepskin rugs or their natural comfort for the human body. Sheepskin rugs are naturally beautiful, luxurious and comfortable. Sheep skin rug wool breaths and is static resistant. A Sheepskin rugs durability is unsurpassed by other natural fibers and woven wool alternatives. If you want something you can rest your feet or entire body on, a Sheep skin Rug is the answer. The structure of Sheep skin rug wool allows the body to be supported by millions of resilient and springy wool fibers, providing total support and comfort for your body. And Sheep skin rug wool is a great insulator. Wool traps air, which insulates you against cold and heat.

One of the oldest and most natural materials known to mankind can enhance your comfort and improve your well-being. Your Sheepskin rug will be naturally resilient. Sheepskin rug wool is naturally resilient and will never lose it’s beautiful shape. Each Sheepskin rug wool fiber is made from millions of minute coiled fibers that stretch and give rather than break. Sheep skin rug wool is naturally stain, soil and flame resistant too. The surface of a wool fiber is covered by a thin protective membrane which gives wool an ability to shed water and water based stains. The high moisture content of the fiber, along with wool’s protein constituents, gives Sheepskin rugs excellent flame resistance.

Should you wish to store your Sheep skin rug at any time, place it in a cool airy place avoiding direct sunlight. Packaging in plastic bags for an extended period of time is not recommended as the Sheep skin rug fibers will not breathe and condensation may occur in warm conditions.

You may vacuum your Sheepskin rug, but we recommend a non-upright vacuum. Sheepskin rug wool is naturally resistant to Soil and Dirt If you look at a wool fiber under a microscope, you can see that its structure is made up of overlapping scales, arranged much like roof shingles. These scales keep dust and dirt near the surface of the pile, where it can be easily released by vacuuming. Hand wash your sheep skin rug with cold water and Woolite, or another specialized wool cleaner. You may spin to remove excess water. Dry your Sheep skin rug flat or on a line and stretch to shape while damp. Keep away from direct sunlight and artificial heat. Do not tumble dry your Sheepskin rug. After washing, the wool may revert back to its natural curly state. You can help restore the fluffy appearance by brushing the wool while it is wet and again when it is dry. A wire brush or comb is suitable.

Exotic Area Rugs Frequently Asked Questions

Here at Hollywood Love Rugs, we feature such a great variety of elegant and exotic area rugs that we have prepared this Q and A for our customers which contain answers for some commonly asked questions regarding the qualities, similarities and differences in flokati rugs, sheepskin rugs, tibetan lambs wool, cowhides, faux fur and other products.

Q: What is Flokati?

A:
Flokati is a unique wool shag rug made exclusively in Greece. It is a traditional product and has been made for over 1500 years. It is hand woven, and immersed in water until the yarn swells and creates the unique flokati shag effect. It is then sun dried.

Q: What is the difference between the flokati and a sheepskin rug?

A:
Flokati is made from wool yarn, a sheepskin rug is an actual pelt or skin/hide from a sheep. Please note that all rugs made from animals on our store are after-market products. No animals are killed to make rugs. Flokati is cushiony, but sheepskin is a fur and much softer to the feel.

Q: What about other Greek wool shag rugs?

A:
Our other wool shag rugs are made in a similar fashion to traditional flokati. Machine tufted wool shag rugs are still immersed in water to produce the swollen flokati shag effect, but they are made on a machine run loom, and are tufted. This gives a slightly different surface appearance and since they are not hand made they are the most economical. Our modern weave is hand made and made in the traditional way except that it has a poly fiber yarn backing for superior stain resistance, durability and a tighter weave which make it less prone to allow soiling to pass through to the floor.

Q: What about Tibetan Lamb and other wool shag rugs?

A:
Tibetan Lamb, is another animal skin rug. It is even softer than sheepskin and very silky. Our other wool shag rugs are made in a similar fashion to traditional flokati. Machine tufted wool shag rugs are still immersed in water to produce the swollen flokati shag effect, but they are made on a machine run loom. Our modern weave is hand made and made in the traditional way except that it has a poly fiber yarn backing for superior stain resistance and durability consistent with our customer's modern active lifestyle.

Q: The color description says it is "off-white" but the photograph looks pure white. How do I tell what the color is?

A:
We describe the color absolutely with care to be as accurate as possible as to the actual color of the material. However, lighting and texture has a big influence on how that color is perceived by the viewer. We cannot of course account for differences in your computers graphics display and monitor settings, so it is important to consider the written description of the color as being accurate.

Please note that all our photographs are taken in daylight balanced conditions. In those same conditions, the item should have the same appearance in your home. However, afternoon sunlight is reddish, incandescent lights are reddish, flourescent lights are greenish. This will have an effect on the appearance of any rug. Shag material is soft, and not reflective. Light also casts shadows on shag material in a random way. So this is very important to consider when making your choice. Soft goods and shag materials are very light sensitive.

Q: I want something soft but I don't want an animal product in my home, especially a real hide.

A:
We recommend our extensive line of faux fur rugs, which are entirely synthetic, hypoallergenic, machine washable and whle they are extremely soft and luxurious contain no animal products whatsoever.

Q: Where do your cowhides come from, and how do I know if what I'm buying is good quality?

A:
All our cowhides are chromium tanned from Brazil. These are recognized the world over as being the best cowhide rugs available. These are soft, pliable, do not shed and will last a lifetime with proper care. There are a lot of cowhides on the market from other areas, including Mexico. Please remember that the quality of the tanning is not apparent when the cowhide leather is new, but it will have a profound effect on it's longevity and appearance over time.

Q: I want a special custom rug. What can I look at for that purpose?

A:
We offer custom Flokati in all weights, colors and any size. We also can make custom sheepskin rugs and Tibetan Lamb's wool rugs. In addition, we have Area Rug Collections which feature Runners which can be ordered by custom length.

Q: What is the difference in these 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 kilo flokati rugs? What does this mean?

A:
Flokati rugs are typically marketed by indicated the weight in wool per square meter. In practical terms, it simply means more or less material in the same area. This influences the thickness of the rug, and also the density of the pile. A 4.0 kilo flokati has twice as much material as a 2.0 kilo flokati, so it is thicker, the yarn is thicker, and it is denser with the pile tending to be more upright.

Q: How do I decide what weight to choose?

A:
Budget is the first consideration. If budget is not a consideration, then look and use vary between these weights. A 4.0 kilo rug is very ostentatious and will generally be a decor item on in it's own right. It's a bit high to put much furniture on, and will not fit under a door if it has to be opened over the rug. A 2.0 kilo rug is still very nice, but it is more practical to put furniture over and generally a door will open over it.

Q: What about color in Flokati? What do you recommend?

A:
Please remember that a high quality flokati rug can last 25 years or more with moderate traffic. It will most likely outlast your decor several times over, so be sure the color is something you will be happy with for a very long time. We always recommend the natural white as it is very neutral and goes with anything, unless there is a real pressing need for a particular color.

Q: I want to try and match the color of my rug with my couch? Can you send samples?

A:
We do have samples of flokati and depending on availability of other materials as well. However, please note that flokati is a soft good. The nature of the shag is that light and shadow play unevenly across the surface. Even if it is exactly the same dye standard color as your couch, it will not look the same. It is not reflective, and is very light sensitive. We never recommend trying to match colors.

Flokati Rugs Enduring Asset

A flokati rug is a wool shag rug. These rugs are hand woven, and are used in many configurations in home decor. When shag rugs became popular and prominent during 70s, flokati rugs were introduced and quickly rose in popularity. Flokati has continued to maintain stylish popularity, especially for those seeing elegant and luxurious comfort in a contemporary fashionable home décor item.

Flokati rugs have been traditionally used in Greece for 1500 years. These were used as clothing, beds in tents, and for keeping warm in winter. These rugs were made by Vlach shepherds from hand raised sheep and the women wove the wool into handwoven rugs. The unique flokati appearance developed from the Vlach sheep farmer’s habit of washing sheepskin in Pindos mountain river water. Traditionally it was placed under a water fall. This quality of water resistance helps it to tighten, until the stack becomes fluffy. This is called the “birthing” of a flokati. This is what gives the flokati its enduring unique qualities.

This rug is made of raw wool which is spun into the loops and the mass is cut by hand. Then it is washed in mountain water and pitched to get the softness and fluffiness and then sun dried. The waterfall wash is the secret behind the perfect flokati rug. There are many manufacturers of flokati rugs available. Originally, flokati was only made from Greek Wool, but today because of the worldwide demand much of it is made from New Zealand Wool.

The quality of the flokati rug is measured by the weight. Flokati rugs are measured by weight in grams per square meter of wool. They are available in weights from 1.3 kilo all the way up to 6.0 kilo and the pile height varies of course with the weight. A 3.0 kilo flokati rug is about three inches in pile height, a 6.0 kilo flokati is about five inches in pile height. These are appropriate for different uses in one’s home décor.

There are two types of flokati rugs, traditional and Modern rugs. The weight of a traditional flokati rug varies from 2.0 kilo to 6.0 kilo and the weight of modern rugs varies from 1.5 kilo to 3.0 kilo. Flokati rugs are available in many colors like off-white, winter white and all designer colors. They are also available in various sizes and shapes to suit the area of a house. At Hollywood Love Rugs we specialize in custom orders of traditional Flokati Rugs and have provided custom flokati for many clients in many exotic configurations and colors, including a 4.0 kilo 14 foot round flokati for use under a grand piano.

The flokati rug is known for it’s amazing durability and a quality flokati can last with moderate traffic for as much as 25 years if properly cared for. It is naturally soil and stain resistant, and they are all washable. Small rugs can be machine washed in cold water with a specialized wool cleaner and gentle cycle and air dried. Large flokati rugs can be professionally washed and air dried.

Thick and Soft Area Rugs - Shag Area Rugs - How to Choose

Hollywood Love Rugs has specialized for many years in quality sheepskin rugs and traditional flokati rugs; both of these offer thickness, softness and a luxurious feel. Fur rugs are of course always the softest, but don't have that contemporary look that many people desire. Over recent years there have been many new products created in the shag rug market that attempt to fill that gap. Many people prefer wool rugs for their durability and unique qualities, and in addition to flokati rugs, we carry many varieties of wool shag rugs as well. Cotton shag rugs are very popular as they can be dyed in very bright and beautiful pastel colors. In addition to faux fur rugs, there are now many varieties of polyester shag rugs which are extremely easy to care for, and if the yarn is very fine can also be extremely soft. There are also artificial silk shag rugs, which are certainly the softest variety and rivals fur rugs in their softness to the touch and feel. Probably the most creative approach are the blended yarn shag rugs which combine the qualities of more than one material into a beautiful shag area rug that can have both thickness, softness, beauty, durability and the color one desires in one's living space. Wool-Polyester blends are now very popular, as well as many blends of artificial silk yarn, which bring softness to other basica materials like wool and cotton. It is possible today to choose a shag rug which combines all the qualities one seeks in one's home decor and rugs decor, thickness, softness, color, durability and ease of care.

Why Hollywood's Celebrities Love Hollywood Love Area Rugs

Many people are curious about our celebrity clients, many of which purchase unique items for their own homes, or in the case of directors and producers for their films. Mel Brooks, for instance, purchased some black sheepskin rugs for his film "The History of the World." I think these were used for the cave man scenes. Michael Mann purchased a standard black and white zebra print cowhide for his movie "Heat." We spent a great deal of time with Cher in her spacious Malibu home helping her decorate her living room with over twenty leopard print cowhides. She had to see what they were going to look like before she would purchase them. We do offer this kind of personal service and that's one reason we are so successful catering to the Hollywood Trade.

Of course we custom made a fabulous round flokati rug for the MTV Music Awards one year and sold numerous animal print rugs to Sony for the movie "Men in Black II." We even sold sheepskin rugs to a fabulous looking Raquel Welch for her personal Yoga exercise.

But probably the most fun was selling to music industry personalities like Snoop Dog and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Snoop Dogg and his entourage filled up their van with cowhides and sheepskin rugs. Billy Gibbons bought a lot of electric guitar area rugs to give as gifts to his friends, as well as leather shag for his home.

Over the years we have provided many custom orders for trade shows, television commercials, motion pictures, television programs and the Broadway Theater. We not only are expert at finding those hard to locate specialty items quickly but provide express personalized service.
